The War and Freddy

Great news!   THE WAR AND FREDDY  will be republished in September 2007 in the Happy Cat imprint of Catnip Books.

THE WAR AND FREDDY is one of my favourite books.   It was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize in 1991.   I was thinking one day about the Second World War, what I remembered of it and what it was like being a small boy while it was being fought.  It occurred to me that one day all this would be forgotten and nobody would know what it to grow up in those long-ago fearful days.   It was then that the character of Freddy began to take shape.  Freddy isn’t me, yet in many ways he’s like me.  He has adventures, some of which are something like things which happened to me though never quite.   Other adventures may have happened to other people.   Some never happened at all, but perhaps they ought to have. They are real, proper stories in their own right.  And George Buchanan’s illustrations are dead right for the book.

Here's the wonderful new cover :

And here’s what some critics thought about the book when it first came out.

“Funny, wise, wonderfully readable, this book, with its admirable illustrations by George Buchanan, should find a wide readership, among war veterans as well as the nine-year olds for whom it is probably intended … This is by no means kid’s stuff, thought it is great stuff for kids.”

MARCUS CROUCH in Junior Bookshelf.

“Dennis Hamley with captivate his readers with this wonderful, thought-provoking and. above all, humorous collection of stories.”

SUE ROGERS in The School Librarian

Christmas has always been and always will be a special time of year, a time either of great happiness or great sadness and sometimes both.   Here are eight stories of different Christmases, all of which are memorable in their different ways.

The stories are arranged in order of age: the first for young children, the last for adults.

There are two World War 2 stories, one which refers to it and one which refers to another war.  There’s a football story, a ghost story and  two stories with carols in them - and a lot more besides.   There’s a story about a really weird Christmas guest and another about a tumultuous family row.   All ordinary Christmases to start with, but which turn into being anything but ordinary.

Each story has a postscript telling what real memory lies behind it and how it came to be written.
